SSC Stenographer Selection Process, Syllabus and Skill Test

Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts Stenographer Exam for the recruitment of Grade C and Grade D posts in Ministries/ Departments of Central Govt including their Attached/ Subordinate offices located all over India. Stenographer recruitment process through All India Open Competitive Computer Based Examination has been initiated by the commission. SSC Steno Grade C and D Selection Process

SSC Stenographer Exam will be conducted at the various centers/ cities of respective Regional Offices. For selection, candidates will have to undergo computer based examination, skill test and document verification as follows:
Phase 1 – Computer Based Examination.
Phase 2 – Skill Test in Stenography.


Phase 3 – Document Verification.

SSC Stenographer Selection Process and Syllabus

Candidates whose application forms are found to be in order will be issued Admit Card (Admission Certificate) through the official website of concerned Regional Offices. In addition to Admit Card, you will have to carry at least two passport size recent colour photographs, original valid Photo-ID proof such as Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, Driving License, PAN Card, Passport etc at the exam centre.

For the posts of SSC Stenographer Grade C and D, candidates will have to undergo three stages of recruitment process in the order of tests as follows:

Computer Based Examination

Firstly, candidates will have to appear in the Computer Based Exam for the posts of SSC Stenographer Grade C and D. Question Paper for the Computer Based Exam will consist of total 200 Objective Type Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) of maximum 200 Marks. The exam will be of 02 Hours duration for General candidates and 02 Hours 40 minutes for the candidates eligible for scribe.

There will be negative marking of 0.25 marks for every wrong answer. The questions (except in Part 3) will be set both in English and Hindi. The question will be based on General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness and English Language & Comprehension as per the pattern below.

Part 1 (General Intelligence and Reasoning) – 50 Questions (50 Marks)
Part 2 (General Awareness) – 50 Questions (50 Marks)
Part 3 (English Language and Comprehension) – 100 Questions (100 Marks)

Marks scored by candidates in the Computer Based Examination will be normalized by using formula and such normalized scores will be used to determine final merit and cut-off marks. Based on the marks scored in the Computer Based Examination, candidates will be shortlisted category-wise to appear in the Skill Test for the post(s) they have applied for.

Minimum qualifying marks in Computer Based Examination:
UR Category: 30% Marks
OBC/EWS Category: 25% Marks
SC/ST Category: 20% Marks

SSC Stenographer Syllabus for Grade C and D Posts:

General Intelligence & Reasoning (Part 1) – It generally comprises of questions of both verbal and non-verbal type. This part will include questions on analogies, similarities and differences, space visualization, problem solving, analysis, judgment, decision making, visual memory, discriminating observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, verbal and figure classification, arithmetical number series, non-verbal series etc. This part will also include questions designed to test the candidate‘s abilities to deal with abstract ideas, symbols & their relationship, arithmetical computation and other analytical functions.

General Awareness (Part 2) – Questions in this part will be designed to test the ability of the candidate‘s general awareness of the environment around him and its application to society. Questions will also be designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person. This part will also include questions relating to India and its neighbouring countries especially pertaining to Sports, History, Culture, Geography, Economic scene, General Polity including Indian Constitution, and Scientific Research etc. These questions will be such that they do not require a special study of any discipline.

English Language & Comprehension (Part 3) – In this part, candidates understanding of the English Language, its vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms and its correct usage, etc. and his/her writing ability will be tested.

Skill Test in Stenography

Candidates qualified in Computer Based Exam will only be called for the Skill Test of qualifying nature. In the Skill Test, there is no exemption for any category of candidates. The Skill Test will be held at the SSC Regional/ Sub Regional Offices or at other Centres as decided by the Commission. The Skill Test (of qualifying nature) will consist of:

Dictation – 10 minutes in English/ Hindi at the speed of 100 w.p.m. for the post of Steno Grade C and 80 w.p.m. for the post of Steno Grade D.

Transcription time – 50 minutes (English)/ 65 minutes (Hindi) for the post of Steno Grade D and 40 minutes (English)/ 55 minutes (Hindi) for the post of Steno Grade C.

The Commission will fix category-wise qualifying standards in the Skill Test for each post. The candidates who qualify the Skill Test will be considered for final selection on basis of their merit in the Computer Based Examination.

Document Verification (DV)

All the candidates qualified for Document Verification are required to appear for Document Verification along with the photocopies and original documents. For Document Verification, you will have to carry 02 passport size recent colour photographs and 01 original valid Photo ID Proof such as Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, Driving License, PAN Card, Passport, Government School/ College ID Card or any other Photo bearing ID Card issued by Central/ State Govt. You will have to submit copies of various documents as follows:

1. Matriculation/ Secondary Certificate.
2. Educational Qualification Certificate.
3. Order/ letter in respect of equivalent Educational Qualifications.
4. Caste/ Category Certificate, if belongs to reserved categories.
5. Persons with Disabilities Certificate in the required format (if applicable).
6. Serving Defence Personnel Certificate, Undertaking and Discharge Certificate (for Ex-Servicemen).
7. Relevant Certificate if seeking any age relaxation.
8. No Objection Certificate, in case already employed in Govt/ Govt undertakings.
9. Relevant documents in case candidate claims change in name after matriculation on marriage or re-marriage or divorce etc.
10. Any other document specified in the Admission Certificate for Document Verification.

Final selection and allocation of Ministries/ Departments will be made on the basis of the performance in the Computer Based Examination and the preference of Post(s)/ Department(s) exercised by candidates.
